«DOUBLE INVENTION», TRANSLATION FROM THE POEM «DOBLE INVENCIÓN», BY JULIO CORTÁZAR

 Julio Cortázar, a la trompeta.
[Julio Cortázar, playing the trumpet.]

·

·

When the compass that is moving us
encodes the terms of our travel,
and when the word snow is erased
during all the time of the landscape

at last some love will be taking us,
taking us up to the ferryboat,
and in this hand without a message
your light awake sign there will be.

By inventing you I believe I am,
an eagle alchemy through the wind
from the shadow and also the sand,

and through that vigil you are inspiring
the shadow with which you enlighten me
and the whisper with which you invent me.

«TO READ "HAVE" AT THE BEGINNING ¹·», TRANSLATION FROM THE POEM «PARA LEER DE FORMA INTERROGATIVA», BY JULIO CORTÁZAR

Julio Cortázar y un reloj de arena
(Julio Cortázar and an hourglass)

·

Has visto,
verdaderamente has visto
la nieve, los astros, los pasos afelpados de la brisa...

Has tocado,
de verdad has tocado
el plato, el pan, la cara de esa mujer que tanto amás...

Has vivido
como un golpe en la frente,
el instante, el jadeo, la caída, la fuga...

Has sabido
con cada poro de la piel, sabido
que tus ojos, tus manos, tu sexo, tu blando corazón,
había que tirarlos,
había que llorarlos,
había que inventarlos otra vez.

·

(Translation)

·

You have seen,
you have truly seen
the snow, the stars, the plush steps of the breeze...

You have touched,
you have truly touched
the dish, the bread, the face of that woman you love so much...

You have lived
like a blow on the forehead,
the instant, the gasping, the setback, the escape...

You have known
with each pore of the skin, known
that your eyes, your hands, your sex, your gentle heart,
had to be thrown away,
had to be mourned,
had to be invented once again.
